The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Foundation is pleased to announce the hiring of Michael Delzotti, CFRE, CSPG, as new president and chief executive officer. Delzotti will begin his new role in early December. The 好色先生 Markey Cancer Foundation serves as the fundraising arm for the 好色先生 Markey Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center serving Kentucky and the surrounding Appalachian area.

Dozens of neurologists, other medical professionals and researchers gathered at the University of Kentucky Nov. 25 to hear the words of Dr. Walter Koroshetz, director of the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health. In his first year as director, Koroshetz has made it a point to travel around the U.S.

The National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINDS) has awarded a five-year, $1.6 million grant to John C. Gensel, Ph.D., of the University of Kentucky Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center (SCoBIRC), to study the potential role of the immune system in repairing spinal cord injuries. Spinal cord injuries can result in permanent paralysis. Macrophages, white blood cells involved in immune responses, migrate to wounded areas of the spinal cord following an injury, where they assume M1 (i.e. pro-inflammatory) or M2 (i.e. pro-tissue repair) functions.

The field is littered with treatment failures; the last time the FDA approved a drug to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease was 2003. Fox Foundation (MJFF) Parkinson鈥檚 Disease Therapeutics Conference. 好色先生 professor Greg Gerhardt and associate professor Richard Grondin will today present 鈥淭herapeutic Development of siRNA Targeting Alpha-Synuclein鈥 during the MJFF Parkinson鈥檚 Disease Therapeutics Conference in New York.

Conquer Paralysis Now (CPN) has awarded two of its 12 grants to researchers at the 好色先生 Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center (SCoBIRC) through its Conquer Paralysis Now Challenge. No other institution received more than one grant. Sasha Rabchevsky, Ph.D., received the Out of the Box Award, which provides an initial $50,000 funding for high-risk, high-potential research ideas.

As many in the research community know, the 鈥淐ommon Rule鈥 refers to current regulations to protect individuals who participate in research as human subjects. The regulations, which have been in place since 1991, are followed by 18 federal agencies that support research 鈥 hence the name. Today I鈥檇 like to give you some background on how these regulations 鈥 and the conversation around these regulations 鈥 have evolved since 1991, and let you know about an opportunity to provide feedback on the modernization of these important rules.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) has awarded Joe Abisambra, Ph.D., of the University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging a five-year, $1.6 million grant to study a group of diseases called tauopathies. Tauopathies are a group of more than 20 neurodegenerative disorders that affect nearly eight million Americans. These disorders all share one common characteristic: deposition of a protein called "tau" into sticky bundles inside brain cells.

Dr. Shinichi Fukuda, postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Jayakrishna Ambati at the University of Kentucky's Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has received two prestigious awards to advance his research of dry macular degeneration. . The "Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research Abroad of Japan Society for the Promotion Science," presented by the Japan Society for the Promotion Science, is a two-year award given to foster highly capable researchers with wide international perspectives.
