Beth Garvy, PhD, and Sidney Whiteheart, PhD, originally planned to study blood clotting in HIV-positive patients when they first approached one another to establish a unified research team. Then COVID-19 emerged, and their focus shifted on the disease that started a global pandemic.
In elementary school, Shaw Powell鈥檚 favorite subjects were art, physical education, and science, and in that order. Interestingly, the Northern Kentucky native鈥檚 career has followed this same trajectory.
First, he received his bachelor鈥檚 degree from Eastern Kentucky University in art education. Then he joined the Army National Guard and served for seven years. Lastly, in the spring of 2021, he graduated with a Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) to pursue a research career.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 11, 2021) 鈥 Dr. Jay Avasarala, professor of neurology and director of the University of Kentucky鈥檚 Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, and co-authors, conducted a retrospective study in which they evaluated approximately 96.5 million enrollees in a database. More than 200,000 of the enrollees had inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The research focused on looking at the effect of TNF-alpha inhibitors, biologic agents, used in IBD treatment on the probability of developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
When Abi Recktenwald graduates from the 好色先生, she will officially start a career she never imagined possible thanks to a combination of hard work, skill, and a strong faculty support system.
Going into her third year, Recktenwald had a wide range of interests across medicine and surgery. However, on her pediatric rotation early that year, she encountered a child who needed a complex plastic surgery procedure to cover a skin defect. It was through the experience she realized plastic surgery was her calling.
