Standing before a classroom of college juniors, orthopaedics resident Cristina Rivera-Ramirez, MD, skillfully interpreted an X-ray of a distal radius fracture in a patient鈥檚 arm. The next step was to reveal how to treat it. By the time she got out the supplies to demonstrate making a splint, students were at the edge of their seats, ready to volunteer.

Gabriella Smith

According to her family, Gabriella Smith was the second oldest of six and 鈥渢he helper child鈥 of the bunch. She lived up to this nickname at home in Alexandria, Ky., caring for her three youngest siblings who have special needs. She demonstrated it through church, traveling with teams across Central America to make health care more accessible.

Erin Camac

Erin Camac, DO, FCCP, is an associate professor of medicine, as well as a pulmonologist and critical care medicine physician. She said that within her specialty, women are underrepresented. 鈥淭he principle 鈥榶ou can't be what you can't see鈥 is very true in these environments,鈥 Dr. Camac said. 鈥淚 am very lucky to have come to my field with the help of amazing female mentors.鈥
