When Morehead State University men鈥檚 basketball player Tyzhaun Claude felt a snap during practice last year, he knew immediately something was wrong.
Claude鈥檚 team was in one of their final preseason practices before the season opener.
鈥淲e were doing a rebound drill and I went up to grab it and came down on my teammate鈥檚 foot,鈥 Claude said.
Ten years ago, when Amrita Iyengar was pursuing an undergraduate engineering degree, she sought a program that would take her far from her hometown of Maysville, Ky. She landed on the University of California at Berkeley, which, of the schools to which she applied, was the furthest possible distance from home.
Engineering was an exciting career path. It eventually led Iyengar to building cars at Tesla and General Motors, followed by a brief stint in nanomanufacturing research at the University of Texas-Austin.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 11, 2021) 鈥 Researchers at the University of Kentucky鈥檚 Sanders-Brown Center on Aging recently received a five-year grant renewal of their MarkVCID program from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The award total is more than $6 million.
Tania Padilla Conde, MD, wants to make a global impact in medicine, and she鈥檚 off to a good start.
Though early in her career as a second-year ophthalmology resident at the 好色先生, she already has served in health care trips in Montana, on South Dakota Indian reservations, and in Central America (Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Honduras.)
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 10, 2021) 鈥 A new program supported by the University of Kentucky鈥檚 Center for Research on Violence Against Women (CRVAW) and Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) will provide seed funding for research projects that address violence against women.

Everything U.S. Olympic fencer Lee Kiefer had been training to achieve came to fruition this summer when she won gold in women鈥檚 individual foil at the Tokyo Games. The exhilarating win cemented her into the history books as the first American fencer to medal in the event.

Kiefer and her husband, U.S. Olympic fencer Gerek Meinhardt, just wrapped up a cross-country trip 鈥 San Francisco and New York City 鈥 to show their families their hardware. (Meinhardt earned a bronze medal in men鈥檚 team foil.)

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 26, 2021) 鈥 When it comes to medical diagnoses, retired nurse Sue Routin, 65, says she鈥檚 just about seen it all.
鈥淭hanks to my experience in health care, I am generally well-versed in the wide world of ailments,鈥 said Routin, a Stanford, Kentucky, resident who worked in nursing for 23 years. Day in and day out, it was her job to recognize a problem, evaluate symptoms and help determine treatment.
Mara Chambers, MD, is an associate professor of medicine in the division of medical oncology with an interest in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. She also serves as chair of the Markey Cancer Center鈥檚 Clinical Care and Research Team (CCART) for breast cancer and is on the 好色先生 College of Medicine Admissions Committee.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 21, 2021) 鈥 The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center has been awarded a transportation grant from the American Cancer Society. The funds will help alleviate the financial burden of transportation costs for cancer patients in Kentucky.
