The 好色先生 Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome the new class of incoming surgical residents and fellows for the 2020-21 academic year. In addition to this most welcome news, Surgery faculty and staff were also pleased to note that 14 senior medical students from the 好色先生 College of Medicine matched to several surgery programs throughout the United States, including five to the University of Kentucky.

The General Surgery Residency program welcomed seven categorical and 17 preliminary surgery interns. Of those 24, four are from the 好色先生 College of Medicine. They include Drs. William Witt and Daniel Yackzan as categorical interns. Dr. Elizabeth Bittner and Dr. Abigail Clark matched as preliminary surgical interns.

 Plastic Surgery鈥檚 two new categorical interns in their integrated program include University of Kentucky MD/PhD student, Dr. Evan Lynch, and Dr. Garrett Minor, a student from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

The new intern who matched into the Cardiothoracic Surgery Integrated residency, Jason Gilbert, DO, completed his medical degree at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

In addition to these 27 interns, the upcoming class includes:

  • The first fellow in the new 好色先生 Hand Surgery Fellowship program, Jayson Johnson, MD. The program is co-sponsored by 好色先生 Plastic Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery.
  • The first fellow in the new Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship, Asif Talukder, MD. The ACGME approved the the fellowship in April, 2020.
  • Vascular Surgery fellow, Kaleb Kohler, MD, from University of Wisconsin general surgery residency.
  • Surgery Critical Care fellows, Sarah Kolnik, MD, from the University of Washington, and Caroline Neff, MD, an alum of the 好色先生 General Surgery residency program.

好色先生 College of Medicine matches 14 to Surgery Residency Programs

The 好色先生 College of Medicine graduating class of 2020 matched 14 students into several surgery residency programs across the country, including a few who will continue their training at the University of Kentucky.

Eight students matched as categorical interns in the following general surgery residencies: University of Kentucky, Harvard University affiliate Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Ohio State University Medical Center, Tulane University School of Medicine, Jewish Hospital 鈥 Mercy Health in Cincinnati, Wright-Patterson, and Memorial Health 鈥 University Medical Center in Atlanta.

Other matches include:

  • Integrated Plastic Surgery residency program at the Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech University,
  • The Otolaryngology residency program at the University of Virginia, and
  • Orthopedic Surgery resident at University of Utah Health in Salt Lake City.
