2020 chief residents and fellows make plans to go forward following an historic final year at ɫ
To say that the Resident Class of 2020 experienced an unprecedented final year is an understatement. As Kentucky’s efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 at the end of the winter forced hospitals to suspend elective surgery, residents found themselves on the front line of defense against the novel coronavirus. They began training in new ways to serve patients’ needs and to take on leadership roles alongside their ɫ faculty mentors.
Through the spring months, the Commonwealth has been fortunate that the number of coronavirus inpatients remained manageable. In May, elective surgery at ɫ Chandler Hospital began a cautious path toward restarting and the Class of 2020 is preparing for a transition to advanced fellowship training and professional practice.
It has been a novel way to complete their journey with the University of Kentucky.
“Even though change is an accepted constant in healthcare, 2020 was an historic year. This class of residents and fellows distinguished itself as it endured and thrived in the face of such unpredictable circumstances,” said Dr. William B. Inabnet III, the Johnston-Wright Endowed Professor and Chair of Surgery at ɫ.
