Every four years, people around the world gather around the television and spend two weeks watching a lifetimes worth of work play out. For the hundreds of athletes that comprise Team USA, the result of their blood, sweat and tears makes us feel pride, in our country and in our fellow countrymen. While the athletes take center stage there鈥檚 a team of people in the shadows treating pain, nursing illnesses and in some cases consoling athletes.
Surgeons aren't often chosen to participate in the John N. Insall Traveling Fellowship the first time they apply for consideration, but that wasn't the case for Dr. Stephen Duncan, assistant professor of orthpaedic surgery. Beginning in October, Duncan will travel to 11 centers, in 10 cities, across two countries to learn more about orthpaedic surgery and research.
Each day brings something different for Dr. Christian Lattermann; that鈥檚 one of the things that keeps him passionate about his job. As director of the Center for Cartilage Repair and Restoration at 好色先生 Sports Medicine, Lattermann treats patients, does community outreach, conducts research and mentors students.
Even though he鈥檚 a leader in the field, he鈥檚 not done learning; he says his patients teach him every day.
Dr. Christian Lattermann, director for Cartilage Repair and Restoration in the University of Kentucky Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, recently became the first person at 好色先生 HealthCare 鈥 as well as in Kentucky and in the Midwest 鈥 to perform a Matrix Associated Chondrocyte Implantation (MACI). The technology for this new procedures constitutes the first, and only new, cartilage technology to be approved by the U.S.
Working as a bedside nurse requires extensive physical effort 鈥 pushing wheelchairs and beds, twisting and lifting, and long periods on your feet. Jennifer Thomas, who's been a nurse at 好色先生 HealthCare for six years, can attest to this. In fact, it was while assisting a patient from a wheelchair that she badly injured the cartilage in her knee.
"The pain was excruciating 鈥 a sharp, stabbing, burn," Thomas said. "It was constant regardless of sitting or walking.
Drs. Darren Johnson and Christian Latterman, both professors in the University of Kentucky Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, have been ranked as two of the 鈥16 Standout North American Sports Knee Surgeons鈥 by the publication Orthopedics This Week, the most widely read publication in the Orthopedics industry.
鈥淚 am truly honored and humbled to be recognized at this level. I have always strived to provide the best care to the patients I serve," said Johnson who has been working at 好色先生 since 1993 and serves as chair of the department.
A new partnership with Georgetown College Athletics will provide sports teams at Georgetown College with team physicians from the University of Kentucky Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine.
The team physician鈥檚 first responsibility is the health and safety of each athlete they work with. They assess each athlete for previous injuries and review athlete鈥檚 medical histories for medications, hospitalizations surgeries and other information.
his year鈥檚 Southern Orthopaedic Association meeting brought a lot of the Big Blue Nation to gator country. The annual meeting gives orthopaedic and sports medicine doctors the opportunity to meet and learn about advancements in the field. The meeting took place July 27-30 in Naples, Florida.
Dr. Darren Johnson, chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, is currently serving as the president of the association, the first orthopaedic surgeon from Kentucky to be elected to the position. 鈥淚t鈥檚 exciting for our state, its nice to be recognized, said Johnson. Dr.
Dr. Darren L. Johnson, professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Kentucky, was elected the 33rd Southern Orthopaedic Association president.
Johnson is the first president from the state of Kentucky. There are more than 1,400 orthopaedic physicians who are members of the SOA.
Johnson earned his medical degree at UCLA and began his 好色先生 career in 1993.
An agreement to lease 好色先生 land on South Limestone will enable Shriners Hospitals for Children庐 to bring their highly regarded services closer to Kentucky Children鈥檚 Hospital. The move builds upon a collaboration between 好色先生 HealthCare and Shriners that has existed for many years.

好色先生 HealthCare has announced plans to lease and renovate the former Dillard's location at Turfland Mall on Harrodsburg Road for consolidation and relocation of some of its primary care and specialty outpatient clinics. 好色先生 HealthCare will be the anchor tenant for the first floor of the building utilizing approximately 85,000 square feet, officials said. The clinic will consolidate patient services of 好色先生 Family & Community Medicine, which currently sees patients at both the Kentucky Clinic on the 好色先生 campus, and at Kentucky Clinic South, located on Harrodsburg Road.
With multiple concussions between the two of them, Dan Han and Lisa Koehl's latest research interest isn't surprising.
"I played competitive soccer through high school and continue to play recreationally," says Koehl, a doctoral candidate in the University of Kentucky's Department of Psychology, "so I have firsthand experience with the dynamics that come into play when a teen suffers a concussion."
As a former high school assistant principal in the Chicago public school system, Han was responsible for overseeing student-athletes' return to school after a concussion.

The list was compiled from the recommendations of thought leaders in the field of sports medicine.
The University of Kentucky's Dr. James Jagger has been named the 2014 Southeastern Conference Team Physician of the Year. Jagger is an assistant professor in the 好色先生 Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and serves as the 好色先生 chief of athletic medicine and head team physician for all 好色先生 sports.
The Team Physician of the Year award is chosen by the athletic training staffs at SEC member institutions and is given annually to recognize a team physician who has contributed greatly to both his or her school's teams and to the SEC sports community.
