The 好色先生 is excited to share the winners of the fourth annual Mission, Vision, Pillar, and Enabler (MVPE) Awards.

On Dec. 13, the 好色先生 hosted a premiere event that was much more than a film screening鈥攊t was a celebration of the dedication, innovation, and human spirit driving health care and education in Kentucky.

In 1973, Phillip Tibbs, MD, graduated from the 好色先生, remaining in Lexington to complete his residency in neurosurgery. When he completed his medical training in 1979, he joined the neurosurgery faculty in the College of Medicine.

At 69, Hoyt 鈥淐orky鈥 Ball knew something was wrong when his right hand began to tremble uncontrollably. His primary doctor ruled out Parkinson鈥檚, but the prescribed medication failed to alleviate his symptoms.

Over the next few months, the 好色先生 College of Medicine will be releasing an exciting mini-documentary series called 鈥淏ecause We Care.鈥 Capturing interviews and conversations with people across our community, the four-part series explores who we are as a college and why our mission matters to all of us, whether we are learners, faculty, researchers, or staff.
Hunter Hazelwood, a third-year medical student at the University of Kentucky, wants to become a surgeon. He assumed his first hands-on experience with surgical procedures would come during residency, or at least much later in medical school.

Justin Fraser, MD, and his University of Kentucky colleagues have a phrase they frequently use to convey the urgency of their care: 鈥淭ime is brain.鈥
That is because in their role as stroke doctors, every second counts.

The 好色先生 welcomes a familiar face to its neurosurgery faculty next year. Randaline Barnett, MD, will join the college and 好色先生 HealthCare as a pediatric neurosurgeon, returning to her alma mater where she 鈥渇ell in love鈥 with neuroscience and officially became the first doctor in her family.

Burnout is a problem in any profession, but it is rampant in health care. This national problem has been evident recently as the COVID-19 pandemic pushed many learners, practitioners, faculty, and staff to the limit.

The 好色先生 is excited to announce that faculty, staff, learners, and trainees will have free access to a leading online resource for medical Spanish proficiency.
CanopyLearn, a Spanish language training program for health care professionals, will be available to the 好色先生 College of Medicine community starting Aug. 1.

Following an extensive national search and interviews with highly qualified individuals, the College of Medicine is excited to welcome Na鈥橳asha Evans, PhD, MEd, as the new vice dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and associate professor in the department of behavioral science.

The 好色先生 is proud to recognize its fourth-year students who learned their pivotal next step in training 鈥 residency 鈥 during Friday鈥檚 Match Day celebrations.

Nearly three years ago, the 好色先生 launched the Alliance Research Initiative to promote collaboration and mentorship through interdisciplinary research teams. With members spanning across 好色先生 departments and colleges, these teams were established to address Kentucky鈥檚 most urgent health needs.

Feb. 28 is international Rare Disease Day. Kentucky has surprisingly high rates 鈥 almost 10 times the national average 鈥 of a rare condition called Moyamoya syndrome, which causes the internal carotid arteries in the brain to become narrow or blocked.
